‘The Girl in the Bubble’ Lyrics, Explained Universal

Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz wrote two new songs for Wicked: For Good, including “The Girl in the Bubble,” sung by Ariana Grande’s Glinda.

“It’s very clear what Glinda’s going through there. It’s obviously the turning point for the character,” Schwartz told ELLE.

Glinda sings: “For the popular girl / High in the bubble / Isn’t it high time / For her bubble to pop?”

Wicked: For Good is now in theaters, and it includes a brand new Glinda song.

Composer Stephen Schwartz wrote two new songs for the second installment of the award-winning musical movie, one of which is “The Girl in the Bubble,” sung by Ariana Grande’s Glinda.

She performs the bittersweet number after Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) presents her with a giant pink bubble to travel in, a non-magical counterpart to Elphaba’s broom. The bubble doesn’t require any magic to function, and all Glinda has to do is push a button to set it in motion.

The song shows Glinda grappling with the realities of her privileged life, floating above the people of Oz. She sings: “And so that beautiful girl / With the beautiful life / Has a quеstion that haunts her somehow / If she comеs down from the sky / Gives the real world a try / Who in the world is she now?”

She continues, “For the popular girl / High in the bubble / Isn’t it high time / For her bubble to pop?”

“It’s very clear what Glinda’s going through there,” Schwartz told ELLE. “It’s obviously the turning point for the character—what she’s wrestling with in terms of what her life has been, which has been very easy up until now, and her decision to basically give up a lot of what she thought she wanted. Because she’s actually quite a good person, even though she doesn’t quite know it yet, and she simply can’t live the way she has been living, even though it’s very comfortable.”

He continued, “Then of course, because she’s a character that floats around in this bubble—think about what that means. You’re insulated from everything else. We have the term, ‘living in a bubble,’ and you’re floating above whatever kind of turmoil and difficulties are going on down below in the real world. She realizes that even though it’s an easier way to live, it’s not a way that her soul will allow her to live anymore.”

Director Jon M. Chu previously spoke about the decision to include new music. “They do what timeless stories do,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “They ask us elemental questions of being human, not just the great parts—the celebratory, joyful parts of being human—but the scary, dark parts that test us. Everybody thinks it’s about this time, and yet it’s about all time. We are a little bit good and we all are a little bit wicked, and how do we navigate that?”

He added, “Even after we recorded them, even after we put them in the movie, we kicked the tires on them to make sure that we had to put them in this movie. Otherwise, it wasn’t worth it.”

[GLINDA, spoken]Look

[GLINDA]There’s that beautiful girlWith the beautiful lifeSuch a beautiful lifeBuilt on lies

’Cause all that's requiredTo live in a dreamIs endlessly closing your eyes

She spins such beautiful storiesTo sing her to sleepFull of magic and glory and loveShe's the girl in the bubbleThe bright shiny bubbleBlissfully floating above

Ah, but the truth has a wayOf seeping on inBeneath the surface and sheenAnd blind as you try to beEventuallyIt’s hard to unsee what you’ve seen

And so that beautiful girlWith the beautiful lifeHas a quеstion that haunts her somehowIf she comеs down from the skyGives the real world a tryWho in the world is she now?

And though so much of her wishesThat she could float onAnd the beautiful lies, ah, never stopFor the girl in the bubbleThe pink shiny bubbleIt's time for her bubble to pop

For the popular girlHigh in the bubble

Isn’t it high timeFor her bubble to pop?
