Dean Koontz may be a master of suspense, but he holds nothing back when naming books he’d recommend by other authors. In a post shared to social media, the New York Times bestselling author gives his recommendations for authors more talented than he.

The prolific writer, whose next book Going Home in the Dark is set for release on May 20, 2025, shared a photo of himself signing books. He writes:

ā€œWhat book by another writer do I recommend you read? As humble as I am, I know hundreds are better than mine. I just can’t think of any.ā€

Fans were quick to share their thoughts on their favorite writers, though few dared suggest anyone eclipsed Koontz’s talent.

ā€œI like me Edgar Allen Poe, but I would NEVER say he’s a better writer than you! Also George Orwell was good, but he’s certainly no Dean Koontz. No, you really are the best!ā€

Another added, ā€œYOURS are the BESTā€

ā€œIf it isn't you or King,ā€ wrote another, ā€œit simply has to be Christopher Moore.ā€

Other readers suggest Dathan Auerbach, Kaveh Akbar, and Levon Honkers.

Dean Koontz’s Long, Successful Career

Best known for his suspense thrillers, the Pennsylvania native often blends genres using elements of horror, science fiction, mystery, fantasy, and humor in his books. Having published over 100 novels, Koontz has sold more than 500 million books worldwide. Fourteen of his novels have reached #1 on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list; sixteen have done so in paperback.

Best known for Watchers, Intensity, Demon Seed, From the Corner of His Eye, Phantoms, Lightning, and Hideaway, Koontz is one of the most commercially successful American authors and is widely considered a master of suspense.

A hallmark of his books is their emotional depth. Beyond the tension and the scares, Koontz is known for exploring deep moral and human themes like good vs. evil in his storylines.

While Koontz was hard pressed to name a writer he’d recommend, he has often shown support to young writers on panels and in interviews, encouraging new writers to persist as true talent isn’t always immediately recognized, even by Koontz himself.
