HGTV star Jonathan Scott is opening up about his relationship with his fiancée, actress Zooey Deschanel.
While speaking to Access Hollywood in November 2025, alongside his twin brother and constant collaborator Drew Scott, Jonathan was asked how did he know Deschanel "was the one." Jonathan responded that he and Deschanel "hit it off so fast" when they first met for a 2019 episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series. According to Jonathan, he was immediately taken by the New Girl star's "amazing energy."
Jonathan clarified that he was under the impression that she was still married to her second ex-husband, Jacob Pechenik, the father of her children, Elsie, 10, and Charlie, 8, when they first met. The former couple finalized their divorce in 2020.
"At the time, it wasn't public that she had gone through a divorce. I had just assumed that she was just super nice. I didn't realize she was single," said Jonathan to Access Hollywood.
He then shared that he and Deschanel went on their first date at an escape room. In addition, Jonathan suggested that his first date with Deschanel showed him just how compatible he is with her.
"I've discovered in my life that I could not be with somebody if they don't have a sense of humor or they don't have critical thinking skills. So anybody who has great problem solving skills is going to work great with me, anybody with a sense of humor," said Jonathan, who divorced his ex-wife, Kelsy Ully, in 2013.
He then said that Deschanel "checked off" both those boxes.
Zooey Deschanel Shared Her First Impression of Jonathan Scott
In a joint interview withPeople magazine in October 2023, Deschanel and Jonathan, who have been engaged since 2023, shared details about their first impressions of each other. Deschanel said that she could immediately tell that Jonathan was "silly and fun" and "had a good sense of humor." She also admitted that she thought Jonathan "was kind of cute." Jonathan interjected that he also thought Deschanel was "cute" when he first met her.
Deschanel also said she could tell that she and Jonathan had compatible personalities.
In addition, the Elf star mentioned her first date with Jonathan at the escape room. She shared that while she "actually never done an escape room" before their first date, she knew the activity would be "up [her] alley." She said even though she wasn't the best at solving the puzzles, she "loved it right away."
