Richard Gere may not be exactly homesick after relocating with his family to Spain, but he does miss one very specific thing about his life in New York City.

While returning to attend the DOC NYC Visionaries Tribute Luncheon at the city’s Gotham Hall earlier this week, the actor told PEOPLE that he misses the "energy" of the city most. “Of course, it's very addictive,” he added.

Gere, his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their children — including their sons Alexander, 5, and James, 4, and Silva’s son Albert, 11, from a previous relationship — moved to Spain late last year. The Pretty Woman star told PEOPLE that, overall, the move was a positive one for his family.

“My wife is so happy in Spain, so that's the best part of that,” he said, adding, “She has wonderful family, wonderful friends.”

“Spanish culture, there's a very open joy about it,” he continued, adding that the Spanish people are “very warm and very open and a lot less stressed than what you find here in the U.S.”

Gere also shouted out Spanish food and culture, adding, “It’s a very happy place. Like the Italians. I mean, being in Italy, being in Spain, you're dealing with Latin cultures that just understand life in a different way than we do here.”

Gere previously told Vanity Fair Spain in April 2024 the move was born of a desire to give his wife time to live near her family. "For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture," he said. "She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers."

“I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fabulous,” Gere told the outlet. "Also your ability to live transmitting joy and happiness. It is a beautiful place, the food is extraordinary and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy."

Though he told VF Spain that he considered the move a "great adventure because I have never lived full-time outside the United States," he did make it clear at the time that he and his family would travel back and forth between the countries, and would still have a home in New York to return to.

Gere, 76, and Silva, 41, first met in 2014 after his divorce to Carey Lowell, with whom he also has a son, Homer, 25. The couple wed in 2018.
