Spoiler alert! The following post contains major details about the ending of "Wicked: For Good" (in theaters now).

Could there be another “Wicked” movie? Well, hold on just a clock tick.

“Wicked: For Good” has just touched down in theaters, and like its Oscar-winning predecessor, the fantasy movie musical is soaring to potentially record-breaking box office. And with hundreds of brand deals and a theme park tie-in, it’s hard to imagine that Universal Pictures isn’t pondering spinoffs and sequels to their “thrillifying” cash cow.

The creative team will neither confirm nor deny that something “Wicked” this way comes, although it seems as if a new project is brewing.

“I don’t know how to answer that!” co-screenwriter Winnie Holzman says, laughing as she takes a long pause. “I guess I just don’t know what to say. But what I will say is that I’m so grateful people are enjoying these movies. It’s a really good feeling because we put everything we could into this and held nothing back.”

Who plays Dorothy in 'Wicked: For Good'? And will you ever see her?

“Wicked: For Good” certainly leaves the door open for more stories. The film ends with the green witch Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) venturing into the sparkling “place beyond Oz” with her beau Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), who was transformed into the Scarecrow.

Glinda (Ariana Grande), meanwhile, has stepped into her power as a truly good and honest leader of Oz. She may also have magical abilities, as evidenced by the mysterious Grimmerie spellbook finally opening for her in the movie’s last moments.

Menzel played Elphaba and Chenoweth played Glinda as part of the original Broadway cast of Wicked and made a special appearance in Part 1 of the movie adaptation that stars Erivo and Grande. Part 2 of the movie 'Wicked' is expected to hit theaters in November 2025.

And then, of course, there are 14 “Oz” books written by L. Frank Baum, as well as more than two dozen others published in the years after his 1919 death. Not to mention, author Gregory Maguire has multiple books in his revisionist “Wicked” series, focusing on Elphaba’s descendants and the Cowardly Lion.

In short, there’s plenty of material to draw from if Universal wants to keep the money train rolling. It also depends on whether the cast and creators would return for another venture.

Brrr, also known as the Cowardly Lion, is the subject of Gregory Maguire's "A Lion Among Men."

“It’s the story of Dodo the dog!” director Jon M. Chu jokes, cheekily referencing Glinda’s name for Dorothy's pet Toto. More seriously, Chu says he wouldn’t rule out future installments, although it would have to be “really worth it” after such “a beautiful piece” as this.

“Who knows? But that was never part of the equation,” Chu says democratically. “And I just finished this! I know Universal would want to do it, but that’s hard.”
