Zoe SaldaƱa and her husband, Marco Perego, made an important promise to each other that guides their lives.

In a new interview with Vogue MƩxico, the Emilia PƩrez star, 47, spoke about finding balance, and authenticity, in all aspects of her life, including her family, home and career.

She explained that this also extends to Perego, 46, who is an artist. ā€œWith Marco, there’s a very deep connection. We made a promise: that whatever we did together — in art or in life — would have meaning, or we wouldn’t do it at all," she told the magazine.

SaldaƱa also opened up about learning to embrace vulnerability, even in front of her children.

She and her husband share three sons, identical twins Cy and Bowie, 10, and Zen, 8.

ā€œWhen my children see me sad or frustrated, they ask me why. And sometimes I don’t know what to answer ... that’s when I realize that I’ve spent years trying to appear strong," she said.

Added SaldaƱa: "But there’s nothing more powerful than showing vulnerability."

SaldaƱa and Perego, who met on a flight to New York, quietly married in 2013 after just a few months of dating.

In a 2015 interview with InStyle, the From Scratch actress shared how her husband has allowed her to feel more at peace.

ā€œSince I’ve been with Marco, I’ve been lowering my guard,ā€ she said at the time. ā€œFinally, when we had our boys, I looked at my husband and I realized: I was meant for you, and you were meant for me. I’ve always felt comfortable around men as long as they were friends. Now I finally feel comfortable with my lover. I don’t want to be separate. I want my church. I want to live inside the religion of our own little family.ā€

In 2018, SaldaƱa spoke to PEOPLE about how she and Perego have a "give-and-take" dynamic in their relationship.

"There's no directing my husband, and there's no him directing me," she said. "We are definitely the kind of artists and individuals who follow our own hearts, but we're very supportive and very opinionated."

The mom of three added: "It doesn't mean that we're not going to consider what the other person is thinking or what the other person is saying to us — we will hear it. There is a lot of respect, and it's like a give-and-take."
